Day 13′s challenge is to talk about setting yourself a fannish goal.

Ha! This is an easy one. I need to finish the third story of my Epic Hobbit Soap Opera, The Wanderers. I had started posting it in 2007, but then pulled it because it really wasn’t working. And I’ve been promising readers I’d finish it for years, but it always ends up on the back burner. So since this is the 10th Anniversary year of that series, I will set a goal to finish it before the end of the year.

Anyone have any traps to capture Hobbit muses? >_>

Day 12′s challenge is to talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. What are your hopes and dreams for fandom? Do you have any predictions about what the next five years holds for fandom?

Five years? Heh. I’ve been in fandom much longer than that. I’ve been in online fandoms for almost 20 years, starting out on newsgroups (alt.star-trek.creative, alt.x-files.creative–anyone remember those?) and really nothing much has changed except the mediums (blogs instead of newsgroups, lots more visual stuff with art and vids) and there’s more people participating. Before the internet, there was fanfic available in ‘zines and self-published books. So five years from now? Fans will still be fans. The medium changes, but fandom is still fandom.

My only real hope is that transformative works obtain legal protection as an art form. If I could make a wish, it would be that these insane copyright laws get rolled back to their original time frames and to serve their original purpose: encourage individuals to create, not to allow heirs or corporations to lock up our culture in order to milk cash cows to death.

Day’s 9′s challenge is to rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn’t like (because they weren’t your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn’t be interested) but you ended up loving.

#1. Guy Gardner/Mary Marvel (DC Comics) fic series by duskdog717. This one is simply a pairing I had never even considered, because Guy Gardner and … Mary Marvel(??!). But this series is just really fantastic. It helps that Duskdog is Guy Gardner’s biggest fan, so she gives us a side of him that isn’t often portrayed. Even with their vastly different personalities, you believe that Mary could love him.

#2. I’ve never been interested in Twincest type fics, but I took the plunge into “Tencest” with Tenth Doctor/Metacrisis Doctor fics. And the Loved ‘Verse (Doctor Who) by fid_gin and unfolded73 is really, really good. It’s Ten/TenII/Rose and explores the uniqueness of a relationship where two of the people involved are essentially the same person.

#3. I’m not a fan of ‘serious’ zombies. Zombies as comedies I can do–I adore Shawn of the Dead and Zombieland. But I can’t stand The Walking Dead (I didn’t even make it through the first episode, turned it off halfway through with a headache from too much facepalming). So I’m not inclined to read anything with zombies. But during my devouring of Rumbelle fics this past summer I ran out of things to read and gave a zombie fic–There Was a Crooked Girl (Once Upon a Time) by marchionessofblackadder–a try and really enjoyed it. I was able to overlook my zombie issues because I really like the characters and the setting they are placed in.

Day 3′s challenge is to post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

#1. The first fic I have to rec is Juno’s Resilience of Hope, because this is the fic that really inspired me to write again. It’s a Kirk/Spock Star Trek fic, epic in length and still a WIP. Juno had invited her friends to contribute a self-insert secondary/background character to use in the fic. So I gave her Len Amell (borrowing elements of my Second Life persona) and insisted that I must be Scotty’s girlfriend (I’ve had a crush on Scotty for a very long time ). But apparently Len wasn’t content to be a minor background character and I ended up writing a backstory of how she came to be on the Enterprise and now I’m writing a chapter-by-chapter tie-in to Juno’s story, from Len’s POV. It’s a very rich, detailed universe here, so it was easy to fit Len into it on my side. There are many other fantastic secondary characters in the story (it’s the treatment of secondary characters that really wins me over to a story) besides the development of the main characters. Plus, there are lots of awesome crossovers to other fandoms and many Easter Eggs. Hee!

#2. An Unexpected Victorian Holiday, by Kelkat9. This is a Doctor Who TenII/Rose (and Jackie) fic, where they discover the Doctor was over a century off when he dropped them back in Pete’s World. Really wonderful writing, awesome details of Victorian life, lots of fun to read (I’ve read it twice.) And there is a sequel, Propriety, Murder and Time Travel.

#3. A Bed of Thorns, by Nym. This is a Once Upon a Time Belle/Rumpelstiltskin fic. More wonderful writing, so much detail. Fabulous secondary characters (Wren!). It’s a very long story (currently at 112 chapters) but worth every word. Sadly I’ve fallen behind on reading, because writing Trek has taken over my brain, but this is the first story that’s going to get opened when I’m able to read fics again.

#1. Archive of Our Own (AO3) has become my favorite place to read and post fics lately. It’s not just sex clubs and Gorean slaves. Second Life has lots of fandom-type stuff, in the form of roleplay and themed sims (sims are the base land areas in SL, and sims can be connected to form continents). I “live” on a Victorian steampunk-themed continent, and also hang out on a fantasy sim. You can find roleplay or themed sims based on settings like Tolkien, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lovecraft, etc., plus original settings in fantasy, sci-fi, historical, steampunk, urban fantasy, pirates, Old West, furry, vampires, etc. Second Life depends on creators: just about everything you see or can buy in SL was made by a fellow member, and SL allows you to create things easily inworld. I even built my house myself (a replica of the Torchwood House from the werewolf episode of Doctor Who ).
Day 1 is to rec three of your own works.

#1. Hope for Tomorrow (website|AO3) is my Star Trek fic, which is the backstory for a second story, Lower Decks (website|AO3). These are tie-ins to JunoMagic’s Kirk/Spock story, Resilience of Hope. The stories are Scotty/<del>shameless Mary Sue self-insert </del>OFC. Hope for Tomorrow is Len Amell’s backstory and Lower Decks is a chapter-by-chapter alternate POV to Juno’s story. I’m having so much fun writing this with Juno–it’s been way too long since I’ve been able to have fun with writing like this.

#2. Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts is a drabble I wrote from the POV of Green Lantern Dkrtzy RRR (a sentient mathematical progression). The drabble is written in the form of a Fibonacci Sequence (first line is 1 word, second is 1 word, third is 3 words, fourth is 5 words, etc.). I love the “odd” GLs (Dkrtzy RRR, Leezle Pon, Mogo), and the added limitations on the drabble were a fun challenge.

#3. From Buckland With Love is the first short story I wrote for my Epic Hobbit Soap Opera. It features Ivy’s younger brother, Theo, in a sort of hobbit spy caper. I adore Theo, he quickly became one of my favorite characters, and this was a blast to write. This story never got much love, which disappointed me, so I’m reccing it.

I had to take a break from Fandom–there were some things that kind of ‘destroyed the joy’ for me and I needed to step away. So I wandered the Earth, having adventures…well, not really Earth, more like Thedas, Tamriel, a few Mass Effect relays, a brief career as a test subject at Aperture Labs, and I own <del>way too much</del> property in a Steampunk sim in Second Life. Then Juno tempted me back into writing with Star Trek fic.

I hadn’t finished or posted any fic in four years(!!). I just started to really write again in the past year or so (a few pokes at The Wanderers (LOTR), plus some dabbling in Dragon Age, Doctor Who, and Once Upon a Time), but the Trek fic is the first thing I’ve actually finished and posted since December 2009.

Juno pointed this challenge out to me, so I figured it would be a good way to get back into Fandomy things:

I really enjoyed the reviews I received for this drabble, because they told me that it worked: the reader doesn’t expect Fell Beasts to be sympathetic characters, but I managed to make them so.

Thank you to everyone who wrote a review for this! This is one of my favorite drabbles, so I’m very happy it did so well and received the wonderful comments.

Congratulations to everyone who placed! This was a really tough competition this year, so kudos to you all!

Claim: Hal Jordan/Kyle Rayner
Characters: Hal Jordan (The Spectre), Sister Clarice (The Radiant)
Rating: G
Words: 685
Summary: After initially telling him they wouldn’t see each other again, why did the The Spectre help Kyle so much?
Author’s Notes: Probably a bit of a stretch as far as the prompt is concerned, but this is what the Muses handed me. This is set some time after Green Lantern #119, after Hal becomes The Spectre and has his (supposedly) last meeting with Kyle. I don’t remember if an actual date of death was given for Sister Clarice, so I’m using poetic license to set it around this time frame. Many thanks to my beta reader, juno_magic!

The crossposting plug-in juno_magic pointed me to works great! As you may have noticed earlier, it allows me to spam all of my journals at LiveJournal, Dreamwidth and InsaneJournal all at the same time. Which will make posting stories so much easier! Just have to do it once!

Now I just have to finish some stories…
